About Margaret

In short…

Margaret H. Vickers is a writer who tells dark, gnarly stories of human existence in the thriller, horror and speculative fiction genres. Her first novel Older will be released in 2023.

Previously a Professor of Management at Western Sydney University, Margaret also authored two research books that shine a light on adversity and trauma in people’s life and work.

More about Margaret…

Margaret H. Vickers started her novel writing journey before the age of 10. Heavily influenced by Elyne Mitchell’s Silver Brumby (which Margaret read at least 25 times, and saw the movie in 1993 as the only person over 30 in the audience), Margaret wrote stories and poetry as a youngster to amuse herself, although she never considered writing as a career. Girls weren’t encouraged to become writers back in the 1970s.

So, unmotivated in high school and not sure what else to do, Margaret studied typing and shorthand at TAFE to earn a living (she was pretty good at typing, but hopeless at shorthand), before entering university as a mature age student in her early twenties.  There, Margaret completed a Bachelor of Business studying computer science and subsequently worked in industry developing computer software, before moving into software sales while completing an MBA.

After finishing her MBA, Margaret chose a new path. She commenced as a Tutor at the now Western Sydney University and started her PhD. Margaret was finally writing again, and never looked back.

Writing and researching individual adversity experienced in life and work in subsequent years, Margaret was, in due course, promoted to full Professor in 2008. She then studied creative writing alongside her scientific work, and her interest in fiction writing techniques as a vital means of illuminating traumatic human experiences grew.

Now retired from academe, Margaret has returned to her fiction roots, writing in the thriller, horror and speculative fiction genres.

In between writing, Margaret tries to eat “healthy”, but she loves milk chocolate (it must be Cadbury), French champagne (preferably Veuve Clicquot), and fresh bread of any kind. She also loves music, but detests vacuuming, mediocre Elvis impersonators, and doing clothes- or shoe-shopping. It is best not to look too closely at Margaret’s shoes.

Older, a dark thriller, is Margaret’s first novel.
